How to Maintain Your New Memorial

Once you have purchased a memorial, regular gentle cleaning will help keep it looking at its best. The key is to clean it correctly, using safe methods that protect the stone, lettering and finish.

Simple memorial cleaning advice

Cleaning and maintaining a granite memorial safely

A new memorial does not usually require harsh treatment. In most cases, light routine cleaning is enough to remove dirt and keep the memorial looking clean and well cared for. Using the wrong products, however, can cause unnecessary damage and reduce the life of the lettering and finish.

Below is a simple guide to help you care for your memorial safely and avoid common mistakes that can do more harm than good.

How to clean a granite memorial

For granite memorials, we recommend cleaning with soapy water and a soft sponge. If needed, you may also use a very soft bristled brush, taking extra care around the lettering and inside the inscribed areas.

Always rinse the memorial thoroughly with clean water after cleaning to remove any remaining residue.

What to avoid when cleaning a memorial

We do not recommend using chemicals of any kind on a memorial. This includes household bleach, brick cleaner and other strong cleaning products. These can damage the stone and may also affect the paint or gold leaf in the lettering, reducing its longevity and appearance.

  • Avoid bleach and chemical cleaners
  • Do not use brick cleaner or abrasive products
  • Do not scrub lettering with hard brushes
  • Do not use pressure washers or harsh tools

Preventing rust stains and surface marks

To help prevent staining, make sure metal wreath wire is removed promptly and avoid placing coins or other metal objects on the memorial. These can leave rust stains, particularly on light granite colours and marble memorials.

If staining of this kind does occur, we recommend contacting us for advice rather than attempting to remove it using household products.
